Chapter Two: The Miracle You Can Only Have Once
Walk through any cemetery in England or New England that was in use before about 1900, and the first thing you notice, once you know to look for it, is the children.
They are everywhere. Small stones, often, set close together, sometimes three and four to a family, the dates spanning a handful of years or a handful of months. Aged 2 years and 4 months. Aged 11 days. Infant son. In a single family plot you will find a mother who buried four of her eight children and outlived two more. This was not a tragedy that had befallen that particular family. It was the weather. It was simply what the world was like, for everyone, in every place, for the whole of human history up to a moment that is still within living memory.
We have a number for what that world was like, and the number is one of the most misleading in all of statistics. The life expectancy of a pre-industrial human being was somewhere around thirty to thirty-five years. People hear that and picture a world full of wizened thirty-five-year-olds dying of old age, a planet of the prematurely ancient. That is not what it means at all. The reason the average was thirty-five is that so many people died as children — a quarter of all babies before their first birthday, in many places, and a third or more before the age of five — that the deaths of the very young dragged the whole average down into the thirties. If you were lucky enough to survive the lethal gauntlet of childhood, you could reasonably expect to see fifty-five, sixty, even seventy. There were always old people. There were just also, always, the graves of the children.
I begin in the cemetery because the size of what happened next is hard to feel without it. What happened next was a miracle — a genuine one, the closest thing to a secular miracle the human species has ever performed. And here is the uncomfortable thing about miracles: the very feature that makes them miraculous is the feature that makes them impossible to repeat.
The Hockey Stick
There is a particular shape that recurs whenever you chart almost anything about human civilization across the long span of history. Chart the human population. Chart energy use, or economic output, or the number of books printed, or the speed at which a person could travel. For thousands and thousands of years the line crawls along the bottom of the graph, nearly flat, barely rising. And then, somewhere around two centuries ago, it turns and shoots almost straight up, so steeply that the entire previous history of the species is compressed into a thin smear along the horizontal axis. Statisticians call it a hockey stick: the long flat handle, the sudden vertical blade.
The population version is the most dramatic of all. It took our species something on the order of two hundred thousand years to reach its first billion people, a milestone we crossed around the year 1800. The second billion took roughly a hundred and thirty years. The third took thirty. The fourth took fifteen. We are now eight billion, having added the most recent billion in about a dozen years. A graph of this looks less like growth than like an explosion — which is exactly the word demographers reached for when they named it. The population explosion.
Now, here is the thing about that graph, and it is the central misreading of our age. When you look at a line that has been climbing steeply and without interruption for as long as you and your parents and your grandparents have been alive, your mind does something automatic with it. It extends the line. It assumes that the steep climb is the natural behavior of the system — that this is simply what population, or progress, or the economy does — and that the line will keep climbing for the same reason it has been climbing, whatever that reason is. We treat the blade of the hockey stick as the permanent character of the world.
But a line that goes straight up is not telling you about a permanent character. It is almost always telling you about a transition — a one-time shift from one stable state to another. And the most important question you can ask about any explosive curve is not "how high will it go?" It is: "what was the one-time change that produced it, and is that change still happening?"
For the population explosion, the answer is that two engines fired at once. Neither of them is firing anymore.
The First Engine: A Door That Only Opens One Way
The first engine was death — or rather, its sudden, massive retreat.
Across the late nineteenth and the twentieth century, in a compressed historical instant, human beings did something they had never managed before: they stopped dying young, at scale, on purpose. The causes are not mysterious, and most of them have nothing to do with doctors. Clean water, piped and separated from sewage, eliminated the cholera and typhoid that had emptied cities. The germ theory of disease taught surgeons to wash their hands and mothers to boil their water. Vaccination, then antibiotics — penicillin going into mass production in the middle of the Second World War — turned a hundred former death sentences into minor inconveniences. Better food, more reliably delivered, ended the famines that had periodically scythed through whole regions.
The effect was the single most consequential change in the human condition that has ever occurred. The graves of the children emptied out. A quarter of babies dying became one in a hundred, then one in a thousand. And because the people who would once have died as infants now survived to grow up and have children of their own, the population did not just rise — it compounded. Every child saved was a future parent.
But look closely at the shape of this gift, because its shape is everything. Human life expectancy went from around forty to around eighty in roughly a century. That is a doubling. It is also, and this is the crucial point, a one-time doubling. The forty extra years did not come from making old people older. They came overwhelmingly from stopping the young from dying — from rescuing the enormous mass of humanity that used to be lost in childhood and early adulthood and delivering them safely to old age. Once you have done that, you have done it. You cannot do it again. The children who are no longer dying cannot be saved a second time.
This is why the gains have ground almost to a halt, and why they were always going to. Getting a population's life expectancy from forty to eighty is a matter of plumbing and vaccines and clean needles — cheap, decisive, miraculous. Getting it from eighty to ninety is a different kind of problem entirely. There is no childhood mortality left to eliminate; you have already saved those children. What remains is the genuinely hard frontier of human aging — cancer, dementia, the slow failure of the heart and the kidneys — fought for in increments of months, at colossal expense, against the grinding resistance of biology itself. Japan, which has had the longest-lived population on Earth for decades, now measures its gains in life expectancy in months per decade, where it once counted them in years. The door from forty to eighty swung open once, and a century of humanity walked through it. The door from eighty to ninety is a wall with a few hairline cracks in it, and we are throwing the entire weight of modern medicine against it to gain inches.
And then, recently, something happened that should have ended the "always improving" assumption forever: in the United States, life expectancy stopped improving and went into reverse. Beginning around 2015 — before the pandemic, not because of it — American life expectancy fell for several consecutive years, driven by drug overdoses, suicide, and the slow metabolic diseases of modern life. It was the first sustained peacetime decline in the lifespan of a wealthy nation in modern memory. The line that everyone assumed could only ever go up went down. The miracle, it turns out, is not only un-repeatable. It is not even guaranteed to hold.
The honest way to describe the first engine is the way an accountant would describe a company that sold its headquarters: it booked an enormous one-time gain, and for a while the books looked spectacular. The mistake — the mistake that nearly every institution and forecast of the modern era is built on — was recording that one-time gain as recurring revenue, and projecting it forward forever.
The Second Engine: The Absence of Catastrophe
The first engine kept people from dying of disease. The second kept them from dying at each other's hands — and it is even less permanent than the first.
For almost the entire span of human history, war was not an interruption of normal life; it was a feature of it, as regular as the harvest and very nearly as frequent. And war's demographic signature is brutally specific: it kills young men, the precise cohort a population depends on to produce the next generation. A society that loses a large fraction of its young men loses not only those men but all of their unborn children and grandchildren — a demographic hole that takes generations to fill, if it ever fills at all.
The twentieth century opened by demonstrating this at industrial scale. The First World War killed something like twenty million people and a generation of young European men; the Second killed perhaps seventy or eighty million. And yet what is remarkable about the twentieth century, demographically, is not those catastrophes. It is what came after them. Since 1945, the great powers of the world have not fought one another directly. No World War III. No great-power war of the kind that had recurred, somewhere, in nearly every previous century of recorded history. Historians named this period the Long Peace, and they named it precisely because of how strange it is — how sharply it departs from the normal behavior of human societies.
That peace was the second engine. With the young men not being marched into the machine guns every generation, the demographic cohort that disease had already spared was free to survive, marry, and reproduce, decade after uninterrupted decade. The population compounded not only because fewer children died, but because fewer adults were killed before they could become parents. Peace, like plumbing, is a fertilizer.
But here is the trap hidden inside the second engine, and it is the same trap as the first. You cannot grow a population by not having a war. The absence of catastrophe is a one-time benefit, not a renewable one. The first few decades of unexpected peace deliver a real demographic dividend — all those people who, in any previous century, would have been killed and now are not. But once peace becomes the expected baseline, it stops being a gift and simply becomes the condition. A century without a great-power war does not give you a second century's worth of growth for free. It just means the absence of subtraction. And the absence of subtraction is not the same thing as addition — a distinction that turns out to be the hinge on which everything else swings.
There is a darker edge to this. The Long Peace is not a law of nature. It was the product of a specific and possibly temporary arrangement of the world — nuclear deterrence, American dominance, the memory of the last catastrophe still fresh enough to frighten everyone. None of those conditions is guaranteed to last, and as I write, the assumptions behind all three are visibly fraying. The second engine did not merely stop adding to the fire. It is, if anything, at risk of running in reverse.
No Third Engine
So here is where we stand. The two forces that produced the most dramatic population expansion in the history of the species — the conquest of early death and the absence of great-power war — were both, by their deepest nature, one-time transitions rather than permanent trends. The first has very nearly run its course; you cannot save the same children twice. The second has reached its baseline and may be turning; you cannot keep growing a population by continuing not to have a war you were not having anyway.
And there is no third engine. There is no further miracle queued up behind these two, waiting to fire and carry the curve onward and upward. People sometimes gesture at one — at medicine that will let us live to a hundred and fifty, or at artificial intelligence, or at some technology not yet imagined. Those hopes are worth examining carefully, and each of them, on inspection, does the opposite of what is hoped: it deflates rather than expands, it is a symptom of the ending rather than a cure for it. But the simplest answer is the one the cemetery already gave us. The great gain was always the children who stopped dying. That gain has been collected. There is no comparable gain left to collect.
Which means the hockey stick was never the permanent character of the world. It was the visible shape of a species passing, once, through a door — out of the ancient condition of high death and high birth, into a temporary, dazzling, never-to-be-repeated window of low death and, for a while, still-high birth. The explosion was the sound of that transition. And a transition, by definition, ends.
What we have not yet done — what almost no one has done — is to look closely inside the explosion and notice that it was made of two completely different things blended together. Some of the growth was new human beings, born and raised and entering the world fresh. And some of it was not new people at all, but the same people, lasting longer — the gift of the first engine, the forty extra years, showing up in the population count as if it were growth when it was something else entirely.
These two things look identical on a graph. They are not identical at all. Telling them apart is the most important analytical move there is.
The twentieth century was an anomaly. To understand why, we have to take the anomaly apart.
